Linguistic expression of hero’s visual perception:

the case of the Albynchy heroic legend

Abstract

This article is a continuation of a series of articles devoted to the linguistic description of the main types of perception of the world in Khakas folklore texts. The purpose of the article is semantic-cognitive analysis, identification and description of the lexical and structural features of the reflection of the heroic vision of the world in language. The material of semantic and cognitive analysis was verbal lexemes expressing visual perception, collected by the method of continuous sampling from the text of the Khakas heroic legend Albynchy. In total, in the text we have 137 cases of linguistic implementation of the concept of «visual perception». Moreover, in the analyzed contexts, the active individual, respectively, the subject of perception, is the hero/heroine, therefore, in the study of perceptual processes, the position of these main epic heroes is considered, which is the cognitive aspect of this study. The relevance of our study is due to the insufficient study of the concept of “visual perception” in other Turkic languages, as well as the lack of work on the study of this concept on the material of folklore texts. The novelty of the study is that for the first time in the semantic-cognitive and linguoculturological aspects the heroic vision of the world is described on the basis of heroic legends as a fragment of the folklore-linguistic picture of the world.

In the Khakas language, the representation of visual perception, according to our information, is carried out by 10 verb units. However, the text of the heroic legend Albynchy uses only one verb кöр- “look; see”, in some contexts its combination with another verb of visual perception хара-, characterizing the process of visual perception, can be traced. The study allows us to conclude that the verb кöр- “look; see” has a rich lexical, grammatical, syntagmatic potential and provides all the necessary cognitive representation of the visual perception of the world in all its diversity. The folklore-linguistic system of the Khakases has a lot of unexplored, unsolved, and therefore interesting in terms of linguoculturological conceptual fields. We believe that this topic has a good linguistic potential and perspective for future research.
