REQUIREMENTS

to the articles published in the journal “Epic Studies”

      The original, previously unpublished articles on epic studies and other genres of folklore from authors from all regions of Russia, the CIS and foreign countries are accepted for publication:

university teachers;

postdoctoral students;

postgraduate students;

graduate students;

as well as other persons researching into the scientific field: 5.9. Philology (5.9.4. Folkloristics; 5.9.5. Russian language. Languages of the peoples of Russia)

The UDC is assigned by the author in the scientific library.

DOI is assigned by the editorial board.

Article type: original article

Title (Should be informative and concise, with a maximum limit of 16 words, and should accurately reflect the topic and results of the study. Abbreviations should be avoided.)

Abstract: compositionally it is necessary to build according to the IMRAD principle (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion): Relevance, novelty, purpose and objectives of the research. How the research was conducted, what methods were used. Main conclusions, research results; what are the prospects for the research, directions for further work. The abstract should be not less than 250-300 words.

 

      Articles in the “Chronicle” section are provided without abstracts.

 Keywords: not less than 10 words/phrase that reflect the content and specifics of the manuscript.

        The title of the article, abstract and keywords are duplicated in English.

Article structure:

In the introduction should be a statement of the issue under consideration, a brief review of scientific literature on the topic (links to sources), criticism of the shortcomings and advantages of the proposed approach. A clear statement of the purpose of the work is required. Description of the research material, rationale for choosing of material.

 

The main part of the work should be titled without repeating the title of the article and can be divided into sections. Sections should have names based on the content. All examples in English and other languages should be accompanied by a translation into Russian.

The main conclusions of the study are presented. Simply listing the material presented in the article should be avoided.

All sources are listed in the order in which references are mentioned in the text. For periodicals it is necessary to indicate the author's surname, initials, title of the article, title of the journal, publication year, volume, number or issue, beginning and ending pages of the work. DOI is required.

The literature is additionally duplicated in English in “References” (more details below in the section “Registration of “References””).

Information about the author(s) in Russian and English is given on a next page:

Full name, academic degree (if any), academic title (if any), affiliation, position, e-mail, phone number, ORCID (the author must register in advance and/or update data on publications on the ORCID website https://orcid.org/).

Volume of the article: up to 30 pages, but not less than 15 pages including illustrative material and “Literature”, chronicle – 1-2 pages.

 

Technical requirements

  1. The manuscript should be in one file, preferably in the format “Word Document 97-2003 (*.doc)” (formats “Word Document (*.docx)” and “Text in RTF format (*.rtf)” are also acceptable). Additionally, you can attach files with illustrations for the article.
  2. MS Word editor, A4 format, orientation: portrait, margins: top 2.0 cm; bottom 3.0 cm; left and right 2.5 cm; paragraph indentation – 1.25 cm; line spacing: one and a half; font type and size: Times New Roman, 14 pt, abstract 12 pt.
  3. Manuscript structure and content:

UDC: alignment: left; font size: 14 pt; bold.

DOI: alignment: left; font size: 14 pt; bold.

Title of the article: alignment: center; font size: 14 pt; bold; all caps (TITLE OF THE ARTICLE).

Author’s (authors’) name(s) and surname(s): alignment: center; font size: 14 pt; bold; italics; initials (with spaces) and the author’s surname (V. N. Ivanov).

Institutional affiliation: alignment: center; font size: 14 pt.

Abstract: alignment: justified; font size: 12 pt; bold; italics; paragraph indentation: 1.25. The text of the abstract is in regular font (Abstract. The text of the abstract…).

Keywords: alignment: justified; font size: 12 pt; bold; italics; paragraph indentation: 1.25. The keywords after colon are in regular font, separated from each other by a semicolon (Keywords: word; word; word; …). There is no dot after the listing of keywords.

From the next line - translation into English of the initials and surname of the author, organization (official translation), title of the article, abstract, keywords. Next, after one line, comes the text of the article itself. The Introduction, Conclusion and parts titles are written in bold type, without a dot after them.

 

  1. The languages of publication in the journal are Russian and English, therefore, when mentioning the names of characters, titles of works, etc. in another language, their transliteration in Cyrillic comes first, then the original in parentheses. For example: Кюн Дьёсёгёй тойон (Күн Дьөһөгөй тойон). Also, all examples in another language are given with Russian translation. First the original text is given in italics with a references as it required, then the translation in single quotation marks. If the translation was made by the author himself, then this should be indicated in the format: [trans. author]. The poetic lines of the given examples are divided using a slash ( / ). For example: Аҕыс уҥуоҕуҥхалыгыраабыт, / Тоҕус уҥуоҕуҥ толугураабыт! [10, с. 226] досл. ‘восемь костей твоих брякнули, / девять костей твоих погремели!’ [пер. автора].
  2. All culture-specific concepts (aiyy aimag, ilge, udagan, toyuk, etc.) are italicized and, if necessary, given a definition in parentheses at the first mention.
  3. Abbreviations – only commonly accepted ones (in the text and tables). All abbreviations must be expanded at the first mention in the text. All tables must have headings and continuous numbering within the article, indicated by Arabic numerals (for example, Table 1); references in the text must be written abbreviated (Tab. 1). The text of the table should be double-spaced. A comment on a table should be placed directly below the table.
  4. Illustrative material (graphs, maps, diagrams, photographs) is called a drawing, has continuous serial numbering in Arabic numerals and is written in abbreviation (for example, Fig. 1). Color images (graphs, diagrams) are allowed. The size of the drawing is no less than 40x50 mm and no more than 120x170 mm. The accompanying text must contain information about the author and the date the illustration was created.
  5. References in the text are written as numbers with Arabic numerals in square brackets. [5, p. 67] – to indicate a source with one page, [3, p. 12–56] – to indicate a source with several pages, [1; 2; 3] – to indicate several sources without pages, [1, p. 34; 2, p. 45] – to indicate multiple sources with pages.
  6. Footnotes can be used: 1) to refer to a NON-scientific source; 2) to determine realities, concepts, words, etc.; 3) for additional information that does not “fit” into the text of the article itself, etc. The footnote number format is Arabic numeral; footnote numbering begins anew on each page.
  7. List of Literature:

10.1. there is no comma between the author’s surname and initials; there is no space between the initials;

10.2. title of the work;

10.3. if this is an article from journal or collection of materials: the title of the journal or collection of articles should be in italics;

10.4. publishing data: year, city (all city names are written in full, including Moscow, Leningrad, Saint Petersburg), publishing house (the name of the publishing house is given without quotation marks, except in cases where the quotation mark is included in the name of the publishing house), total number of pages; for a journals - year, number and pages of the article; for a collection of articles, conference materials - year, city and publisher, pages of the article;

10.5. if the source has a DOI, then be sure to indicate the identification number or link (as indicated in the source).

 

  1. References:

1) the order of sources remains the same, as in the list of Literature;

2) all titles (articles, monographs, collections, journals) must be translated into English. The translation of the journal title should be checked on the official website of the journal. If the official translated name is not in the English version of the website, then its transliteration is given. To do this, open the site for transliteration (http://translit.ru), select the “Russian Translit” and “BSI” standards, copy the title of the journal from your article and paste it into the online program window, click on the “To translit” button, copy the resulting transliteration to References (other transliteration systems are not accepted!);

3) all names of cities must be written in English: Moscow, Leningrad, Saint Petersburg, etc.;

4) if the publishing house has a name (“Nauka”, “Bichik”, “Kazakhstan”, “Fan”, “Gylym”, etc.), then its transliteration is given (website for transliteration: http://translit.ru) and “Publ.” is added, eg: Nauka Publ. or Bichik Publ.; publishing houses such as «Издательство СО РАН», «Якутское книжное издательство», «Издательство восточной литературы», «Типография Императорской Академии наук», etc. should be translated into English. If the publishing house has its own translated title (check on the official website of the publishing house), indicate it;

5) volumes, issues, pages etc. must be translated into English: Том – vol., выпуск – iss., часть – part, № – no., С. – pp., с. –  р.;

6) the complete data of the article “For citation”, which are given in some journals, must be re-formatted in accordance with the rules of our journal;

7) after each source, except for sources in English, indicate the language of publication in parentheses, for example: (In Rus.), (In Yakut), (In Tuvan), (In Shor), (In Khakas), (In Yakut and Rus.), (In Yakut, Rus. and Eng.), etc.

 

All articles are checked for incorrect borrowings using the Anti-Plagiarism system.

Articles submitted without complying with the above requirements will not be considered.
